"We First" Coaching: Building Connection for Better Results

As coaches, we’re often tasked with helping clients achieve their personal goals. Whether they’re navigating career growth, improving relationships, or tackling life’s challenges, the focus tends to be on the individual. But what if we could shift this perspective to emphasize interconnectedness? A “we first” approach can transform both the coaching dynamic and client outcomes.

Recognising the "Me First" Trap in Coaching

Clients frequently come to sessions centred on their personal struggles: Why is this happening to me? How can I improve my situation? While these are valid questions, they often stem from a me first mindset that overlooks the interdependence of their experiences.

Similarly, as coaches, we may inadvertently adopt a “me first” approach by focusing on fixing the client’s issues or positioning ourselves as the experts. This dynamic can limit collaboration and hinder the relational depth necessary for meaningful growth.

Shifting to a "We First" Mindset

A we first approach reframes coaching as a partnership. Instead of seeing the coach as the problem-solver and the client as the problem-holder, both parties work together to co-create solutions. This shift not only enhances trust and collaboration but also models relational thinking for the client.

Here are key ways to foster a “we first” approach in your sessions:

  1. Frame Coaching as a Partnership: Emphasise that you and your client are co-navigators in their journey.

  2. Encourage Relational Awareness: Help clients see how their actions affect others and vice versa.

  3. Highlight Support Networks: Guide clients to leverage their relationships for growth and resilience.

Benefits of "We First" Coaching

Research shows that collaboration boosts both performance and satisfaction. When clients adopt a “we first” mindset, they feel less isolated, develop stronger relationships, and gain greater fulfilment in their achievements. For coaches, this approach strengthens the coaching relationship and enhances the client’s long-term growth.

A Call to Action for Coaches

In your next session, look for opportunities to shift both your mindset and your client’s from “me first” to “we first.” This small change can create a ripple effect, fostering greater connection, resilience, and success.

By adopting a “we first” approach, we can build stronger coaching relationships and empower our clients to thrive in their interconnected world.
